Agave Bird Friendly is a project created by Tequila Otomi where we seek the sustainability of the agave. The Tequilana Weber agave is threatened by the loss of genetic diversity of its species, because the producers of the tequila industry have practiced asexual reproduction of the plant in their fields for reasons of ease of propagation, they do not allow the plant to reach to its maturity stage where it flowers and reproduces sexually through seeds because they would lose the production efficiencies of tequila. This problem makes this species very vulnerable to extinction, since, without sexual reproduction, the genetic diversity of this plant is very low and it has no ability to adapt to climate.
